Painless Endoscopy

Painless endoscopy refers to performing endoscopic procedures with minimal discomfort or pain to the patient. Endoscopy involves the insertion of a flexible tube with a camera and light source (endoscope) into the body to visualize internal organs or structures. While endoscopic procedures are generally well-tolerated, they can sometimes cause discomfort or anxiety for patients. Here are several approaches to achieving painless endoscopy:

  • Topical Anaesthesia: Applying topical anaesthesia to the mucous membranes at the insertion site can help numb the area and reduce discomfort during endoscope insertion.
  • Throat Numbing Spray: A throat numbing spray containing local anaesthetics such as lidocaine can be administered to reduce gag reflex and throat discomfort during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
  • Conscious Sedation: Administering sedatives such as benzodiazepines or opioids can induce a state of relaxation and reduce anxiety during the procedure.
